Australia’s Alex de Minaur will take on Czechia’s Jakub Mensik in the group stage of the United Cup 2026.
De Minaur was up against Norway’s Casper Ruud in his first match of the tournament. Compatriot Storm Hunter had already put the Aussies in the lead with her win over Malene Helgo, and he had the chance to seal the tie in their favor.
De Minaur had also won both of his previous matches against Ruud in straight sets. However, the latter turned the tables on the former with a routine 6-3, 6-3 win this time. The Australians still had the last laugh in the end, clinching the mixed doubles match to win the tie 2-1.
Mensik commenced his United Cup campaign against Ruud as well. Barbora Krejcikova’s 6-4, 6-3 win over Helgo had already tilted the contest in Czechia’s favor.
Mensik made sure his compatriot’s efforts weren’t in vain. Despite a quality performance from Ruud, the Czech youngster edged out his older rival 7-5, 7-6 (6) to help his team win the tie.

De Minaur’s serve let him down big time against Ruud. He threw in eight double faults and won only 47 percent of points behind his second serve. He failed to capitalize on his break point chances as well, going 0/5, further compounding his woes. Fortunately for him, his compatriots stepped up to save the day.
Mensik, on the other hand, gave a good account of himself against Ruud. He saved a set point in the second set tie-break to win the match. He rained down 16 aces and won 78 percent of his first serve points.
De Minaur has a perfect 4-0 record against Mensik, and three of those wins came within the last year. However, after his unblemished record against Ruud was tainted with his loss, he will be on guard against Mensik. The Aussie’s defense has triumphed over his younger rival’s flashy shotmaking so far.
However, given their respective performances against Ruud, Mensik has a good shot at claiming his first win over de Minaur. It won’t be easy to do so on the Aussie’s own turf but if he maintains his current level, then it’s certainly possible.
